ah.. speaking of kodak.. i took me few lapse seconds to remember what kodak is.. same like when my friend asked me the other day, “Do you have a floppy disk?” a floppy what?
As far as i could remember there are few items that I know its existance but became obsolete.. Naming some and its probable reason(s) of extinction (or heading for extinction), so at least when the next generation (read: Faeq) read this blog, he can figure what are these things..
1, Kodak or analog camera film-
Still exist but i think it is heading to extinction… not widely being used anymore by org kebanyakan since the introduction of digital cameras.. may be still applicable for the pros or camera ‘pakai-buang’.. cost around RM8-12.. 36 photos max + may be another 2 extra.. need to wait for another day to be processed.. if it was accidentally exposed, or wrongly inserted or processed, everything will be gone.. no way to retrieve it back.. so why bother.. digital camera rocks..
2, Floppy disk / Floppy disk drive - aka diskettes
Damn useful during window 3.1 - windows98.. a storage device commonly used as boot disk, to install software drivers, save/copy assignment from other colleague etc.. normally seen in MyComputer as A:/ or B:/
can store data up to 1.44mb.. in the good old days.. got the 5 1/4″ disk.. bigger than the normal 3 1/2 inch disk.. with single density double density crap.. couldnt remember.. I used it to copy 486 (what?? haha) PC games..
Since Windows 2k and above, drivers are available in CDs and no boot disk required.. Hardly seen in PC nowadays.. Notebook lagi la susah..
Thumb/pen/usb drive is more popular option for storing assignments..
Jazz drive/zip drive by iomega also fall in this category
3, Laser disk & LD player -
I know my FiL got one LD player at home.. but never seen the disk before.. erm.. i meant never watch a movie on LD before.. far better quality than VCD, but with fast growing technology, VCD can have ‘LD copy quality’ oso..
then also came DVD..
with size 3 times bigger then normal vcd/dvd, it will be crazy for ah beng to carry LDs around and run away when police raiding their store..
4, air botol (kaca, not plastic) -
Remember during raya season, two weeks before raya, my late dad would buy cartons (made of wood) of air botol… Coke, F&N oren, strawberry etc.. to serve to guess during raya.. Tutup botol was also useful..
now this gassy drinks normally come in non-environmental-friendly plastic bottle..
* when we were in Bandung, there was a hawker selling tea in bottle.. branded as ‘Tehbotol‘; with coke-alike font..
5, stamp album -
i dunno.. last time people used to collect stamp.. now still got or not? Reason for extinction : Nadrah
6, stencil machine -
dunno the exact brand or word to describe it.. but have u ever wondered how your exam paper being print out in the oldies? my late dad was a teacher and we had the experience helping him out.. typed the exam question on the blue stencil paper, put it in a machine (like mesin-getah) or we called it mesin gelek.. put some special type of ink and begin ‘gelek’ ing.. i think now Photostat machine is more preferred.. or still mesin gelek?
7, public phone booth in malaysia
reason for extinction : mobile phones and Malaysians..
8, rex, lido, odeon movie theater/pawagam
reason for extinction : cineplex and these people..
any others??
