Convinced ourselves we seek not to convince

I received an obituary notice of Nobel Laureate Sir James Black in client newsletter a couple of days back. I then browse through his profile. The famous scottish pharmacologist was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1988 for work leading to the discovery of Propranolol and Cimetidine.

Interestingly this old chap was a lecture in University Malaya, Singapore back in late 40s.

1946 - Appointed assistant Lecturer in Physiology at University St. Andrews

1947 - 50 Lecturer in Physiology, University Malaya

1950 - 58 Senior Lecturer University Glasgow Veterinary School

1958 - 64 Joined ICI Pharma as a Pharmacologist and developed propranolol

1964 - 73 Head of Biological Research and Department Research Director at Smith Kline & French, Welwyn Garden City

1972 - Launched the histamine receptor antagonist programme leading to the development of Cimetidine

1973 - 77 Professor of Pharmacology University College London

1977 - 84 appointed Director of Therapeutic Research, Wellcome Research Laboratories

1981 - Received a Knighthood

1984 - appointed Professor of Analytical Pharmacology, King’s College Hospital

1988 - Received Nobel Prize for Medicine

1989 - MD (hons) University Edinburgh

1989 - DSc Hons University Glasgow

1992 - 2006 Chancellor, Dundee University

2000 - Order of Merit
